Ingredients

The beans

  • 1 pound dried navy beans
  • 3 cups water

The sauce

  • 1 cup ketchup
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons molasses

The vegetables and meat

  • ½ pound bacon
  • 1 cup celery
  • 1 cup onion
  • 1 leaf bay leaf
  • to taste salt
  • to taste freshly ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. Drain the soaked beans well.
  2. Whisk together ketchup, brown sugar, and molasses in a small bowl.
  3. In the slow cooker, add the beans, water, bacon, celery, onion, and bay leaf.
  4. Add the sauce and stir to combine.
  5. Cover and cook on HIGH for 4 to 6 hours or LOW for 8 to 10 hours, until the beans are tender.
  6. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
