Ingredients

The dough

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ tablespoon ground ginger
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon coarse salt
  • ½ cup softened butter
  • ½ cup dark brown sugar
  • ½ cup molasses
  • 1 large egg
  • 3-4 tablespoons milk
  • Flour for dusting

For dusting and decoration

  • ¼ cup powdered sugar
  • white icing

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a large cookie sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, beat the softened butter and brown sugar until fluffy, then mix in the egg, molasses, and milk.
  4. Combine the wet and dry ingredients until a dough forms.
  5. Dust a cutting board with flour, roll out the dough to about ¼ inch thick.
  6. Use a cookie cutter to cut out shapes and place them on the prepared cookie sheet, leaving space between each.
  7. Bake for 8-9 minutes until set but soft, then let cool.
  8. Dust with powdered sugar or decorate with icing before serving.
