Ingredients

Soft Pretzel Dough

  • cup warm water
  • teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoon unsalted butter (melted) or oil
  • 3-3½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2-3 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • teaspoon salt

Dipping Water

  • 8 cup water
  • ½ cup baking soda

For Brushing

  • 1 large egg yolk (beaten with 1-2 tablespoon milk or water)
  • 4-6 tablespoon unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 tablespoon coarse salt for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. Combine warm water and yeast in a bowl and let it sit for about 5 minutes.
  2. Add melted butter, flour, sugar, and salt to the yeast mixture and mix until well combined.
  3. Knead the dough until smooth, then place it in an oiled bowl and cover it to rise for 1 to 2 hours.
  4. Punch down the dough and roll it into ropes, shaping each into a pretzel.
  5. Boil water and baking soda in a large pot and dip each pretzel in the boiling water for 30 seconds.
  6. Preheat the oven to 425°F and line a baking sheet.
  7. Brush each pretzel with the egg yolk mixture and sprinkle with salt.
  8. Bake pretzels for 12-15 minutes until golden brown, then brush with melted butter before serving.
