Ingredients

The greens

  • 3 pounds fresh turnip greens

The aromatics

  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1 cup chopped white onions
  • 3 cloves garlic

The protein

  • 1 piece smoked turkey leg or wing

The broth

  • 1½-2 cups chicken broth

The seasonings

  • ½ tablespoon Creole Seasoning
  • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 1-2 tablespoons sweetener or sugar

Instructions

  1. Boil the smoked turkey leg or wing in water until tender.
  2. Wash the turnip greens thoroughly to remove dirt.
  3. Remove the stems from the greens and slice them into smaller pieces.
  4. Heat olive oil in a large pot and sauté onions and garlic until translucent.
  5. Deglaze the pot with chicken broth.
  6. Add the greens in batches, allowing them to wilt.
  7. Stir in Creole seasoning, smoked paprika, sugar, and the smoked turkey.
  8. Bring the mixture to a boil, then cover and reduce heat to medium-low.
  9. Cook for about 2 hours or until the greens are soft and the turkey is tender.
  10. Remove the turkey, shred the meat, and return it to the pot. Adjust seasoning if needed.
  11. Serve the greens warm.
