Ingredients

The strudel dough

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • ½ cup water

The filling

  • ½ cup golden raisins
  • 2 tablespoons dark rum or whiskey
  • 2 tablespoons apple juice
  • cup pecans, finely chopped
  • 3 medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • teaspoons orange zest
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 cup butter, melted
  • 1 large egg, beaten with one tablespoon of water

The glaze

  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 2 cups powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Make the strudel dough by mixing flour, salt, and sugar in a bowl, then adding eggs, oil, and water until smooth. Cover and let rest for 30 minutes.
  2. Prepare the filling by simmering raisins, rum, and apple juice in a saucepan for about 10 minutes, then drain and cool.
  3. Toast pecans in a skillet until golden, then combine apples, lemon juice, sugar, orange zest, cinnamon, pecans, and the raisin mixture in a bowl.
  4. Preheat oven to 425°F and prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper and melted butter.
  5. Roll out the dough on a floured towel, place half of the apple mixture along one edge, and roll tightly. Repeat with the second piece of dough.
  6. Place both strudels seam-side down on the baking sheet and brush with the egg mixture.
  7. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes until golden brown, then cool completely.
  8. Make the glaze by whisking milk and powdered sugar until thick, then drizzle over the cooled strudel before serving.
