Ingredients

Strudel Dough

  • ¼ cup unsalted butter
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 pinch table salt
  • cup lukewarm water

Apple Filling

  • cup golden raisins
  • 2 tablespoons rum
  • 4 apples Honey crisp, pink ladies, or Granny Smith
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ cup granulated sugar or brown sugar
  • ¼ cup slivered almonds
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • ¼ cup panko breadcrumbs
  • ¼ cup confectioners sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Mix melted unsalted butter, all-purpose flour, table salt, and lukewarm water to form a smooth dough.
  2. Warm a small saucepan with boiling water, dry it, and line it with parchment paper.
  3. Place the dough in the pan, cover it, and let it rest in a warm spot for 30 minutes.
  4. Preheat the oven to 350°F and prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  5. Soak golden raisins in rum for 30 minutes, then discard the rum.
  6. Peel, core, and slice the apples, then toss them with lemon juice and the other filling ingredients.
  7. Roll out the dough thinly on a floured towel or surface.
  8. Brush the dough with melted butter and sprinkle breadcrumbs in the center.
  9. Add the apple filling on top of the breadcrumbs and fold the dough over the filling.
  10. Transfer the strudel to the baking sheet, seam side down, and brush the top with butter.
  11. Bake for 45-50 minutes until golden brown, brushing with melted butter every 20 minutes.
  12. Cool on a wire rack and dust with powdered sugar before serving.
