Ingredients

The beans

  • 2 cans Great Northern Beans (15-ounce cans)

The sauce

  • ¼ cup barbecue sauce
  • ¼ cup ketchup
  • 3 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 ½ teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard
  • ½ teaspoon ground cumin
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil

The aromatics

  • 1 small yellow onion, finely diced

Instructions

  1. Rinse and drain the beans and set aside.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together the barbecue sauce, ketchup, maple syrup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, dry mustard, cumin, salt, and pepper.
  3. Heat the olive oil in a saucepan over medium-high heat and sauté the onion until fragrant and soft.
  4. Add the barbecue sauce mixture to the onions and bring to a boil.
  5. Add the drained beans, reduce the heat to low, and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Serve warm.
