Ingredients

The dough

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (frozen)
  • ½ cup heavy cream or buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • teaspoons pure vanilla extract

Add-ins

  • 1–1.5 cups add-ins (chocolate chips, berries, nuts, etc.)

Topping (optional)

  • to taste coarse sugar

Instructions

  1. Whisk the flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder in a large bowl.
  2. Grate the frozen butter and mix it into the flour mixture until crumbly.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the heavy cream, egg, and vanilla extract.
  4. Combine the wet and dry ingredients, then add your chosen add-ins.
  5. Form the dough into a disc and cut it into wedges or drop spoonfuls onto a baking sheet.
  6. Brush the scones with remaining heavy cream and sprinkle with coarse sugar if desired.
  7. Refrigerate the scones for at least 15 minutes.
  8. Preheat the oven to 400°F (204°C).
  9. Bake for 18-26 minutes until golden brown.
