Spicy Baked Italian Meatballs in Marinara Sauce

Ingredients

The Marinara Sauce

  • 1 28 oz can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp ground white pepper
  • ½ tsp red pepper flakes

The Meatballs

  • 3 lb ground meat (beef, veal, turkey or pork)
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup finely chopped fresh parsley
  • ½ cup grated fresh Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • tbsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tbsp fennel seeds
  • 1 tbsp chili pepper flakes
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1 tsp cayenne pepper

Cheesy Topping

  • 1 cup grated mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup grated sharp cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup grated fresh Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Make the marinara sauce by combining all the sauce ingredients in a saucepan, simmering for 25 to 30 minutes.
  2. Preheat the oven to 425°F.
  3. In a large bowl, combine all meatball ingredients and knead gently until mixed.
  4. Form the mixture into 15 to 18 meatballs.
  5. Sear the meatballs in a skillet until browned, then transfer to a plate.
  6. Cover the bottom of a baking dish with marinara sauce and arrange the meatballs on top.
  7. Cover the meatballs with the remaining sauce and sprinkle the mixed cheeses on top.
  8. Cover with foil and bake for 25 to 30 minutes until the cheese is melted.
  9. Remove the foil, broil for about 1 minute until the cheese is golden.
  10. Let the dish rest for 5 to 10 minutes before serving.
