Ingredients

The meatballs

  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 slices white bread
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • ½ pound ground pork
  • ½ cup minced or grated onion
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • ¼ cup fresh parsley
  • 2 tablespoons chopped basil
  • cup Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon white pepper
  • ½ teaspoon pepper flakes
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 large egg
  • Olive oil spray

The tomato sauce

  • ½ cup olive oil
  • 1 medium onion
  • 2-3 teaspoons garlic
  • 2 14-ounce cans tomato sauce
  • 2 teaspoons dried Italian herbs
  • 1 teaspoon white pepper
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon curry (optional)
  • 1-2 cups broth (beef or chicken)
  • 2 tablespoons chopped parsley (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Soften the bread in milk and set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the ground beef, pork, grated onion, garlic, parsley, basil, cheese, salt, peppers, and egg with the softened bread.
  3. Shape the mixture into about 12 meatballs and refrigerate until needed.
  4. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking pan with foil or parchment paper.
  5. Arrange the meatballs in a single layer on the baking pan and spray with oil.
  6. Bake the meatballs for 12-15 minutes until cooked through and browned.
  7. For the sauce, heat olive oil in a saucepan and sauté onion and garlic until translucent.
  8. Add the tomato sauce, herbs, spices, and broth, and bring to a boil.
  9. Simmer the sauce for about 30 minutes, adjusting seasonings as needed.
  10. Serve the meatballs warm over spaghetti or with crusty bread.
