Ingredients

The cookies

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup cocoa powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon cream of tartar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup salted butter
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup powdered sugar
  • ¾ cup neutral-flavored oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons sour cream
  • Granulated sugar for pressing

The frosting

  • ½ cup salted butter
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • Pinch salt
  • cup cocoa powder
  • ¼ to ⅓ cup heavy cream
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Cream together the butter, granulated sugar, and powdered sugar until light and creamy.
  3. Mix in the oil, eggs, and sour cream until well combined.
  4. Add the flour, baking soda, baking powder, cream of tartar, and salt, then sift in the cocoa powder and mix until combined.
  5. Form the dough into balls and place them on the prepared baking sheets.
  6. Flatten each dough ball with a sugared glass to about ¼-inch thick.
  7. Bake for 8-9 minutes until the edges are set but the centers are still soft.
  8. Let the cookies cool on the pan for a few minutes before transferring them to a cooling rack.
  9. For the frosting, cream together the butter and 1 cup of powdered sugar until fluffy.
  10. Add the remaining powdered sugar, heavy cream, vanilla, and sifted cocoa powder, and mix until thick and creamy.
  11. Spread the frosting on the cooled cookies and add sprinkles if desired.
