Ingredients

The crisp topping

  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • ½ cup light brown sugar
  • ½ cup walnuts, finely chopped
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup butter, melted

The apple filling

  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • teaspoon salt
  • 6 medium tart apples, peeled, halved, cored, and sliced
  • optional vanilla ice cream for serving

Instructions

  1. Prepare the crisp topping by mixing flour, oats, brown sugar, walnuts, cinnamon, and salt in a bowl, then drizzle melted butter over and combine. Refrigerate while preparing the filling.
  2. Preheat the oven to 350°F and prepare a baking dish with nonstick spray or butter.
  3. In a large bowl, mix sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt, then add apple slices and toss to coat.
  4. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish and sprinkle the topping over it.
  5. Bake for 50 to 60 minutes until the topping is golden and the juices are bubbling. Cool for 15 minutes before serving.
