Ingredients

Oat Topping

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour)
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • ½ cup raw almonds, pecans, or walnuts, chopped (optional)
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter, cubed (or coconut oil or vegan butter)
  • 3 tablespoons maple syrup

Apple Filling

  • 3 pounds apples (about 10 cups chopped)
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • teaspoons cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground ginger
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. In a medium bowl, mix the flour, oats, brown sugar, nuts (if using), and salt for the crumble topping. Add the cubed butter and drizzle in the maple syrup, mixing until crumbly.
  3. Peel, core, and slice the apples, then place them in a large bowl with lemon juice, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, ginger, and salt. Toss until well coated.
  4. Butter a 9 x 13 pan and pour the apple mixture into it. Sprinkle the crumble topping over the apples.
  5. Bake uncovered for 35-45 minutes until bubbling and the topping is golden brown.
