Saucy Paleo 5 Spice BBQ Meatballs

Ingredients

The Meatballs

  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 1 Tablespoon grated fresh ginger
  • ½ teaspoon 5 spice
  • 1–2 Tablespoons gluten free Tamari soy sauce or coconut aminos
  • ¼ teaspoon sea salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 3–4 Tablespoons arrowroot or tapioca starch
  • 1 Tablespoon honey
  • ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • ½ teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 egg whisked
  • 1 Tablespoon sesame seeds (optional)

The Sauce

  • ½ cup gluten free hoisin sauce
  • ⅓ – ½ cup naturally sweetened BBQ Sauce or unsweetened tomato sauce
  • cup onion, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon fresh grated ginger
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • ½ cup orange juice
  • ½ teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
  • pinch sea salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 450°F.
  2. In a large bowl, combine all meatball ingredients, adding the whisked egg last.
  3. Mix the ingredients until well combined, optionally adding sesame seeds.
  4. Roll the mixture into balls slightly larger than golf balls and place them on a greased or lined baking sheet.
  5. Bake for 12-14 minutes, turning halfway through, until firm and slightly browned.
  6. While the meatballs are baking, prepare the Orange Hoisin sauce by blending all sauce ingredients together.
  7. Pour the sauce into a medium pan and bring to a soft boil, then reduce the heat.
  8. Add the baked meatballs to the sauce and simmer for 10-15 minutes, turning to coat evenly.
  9. Garnish with chopped cilantro and optional sesame seeds before serving.
