Ingredients

The meatballs

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • cup breadcrumbs
  • ½ cup finely chopped onions
  • 2-3 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1½-2 tablespoons BBQ seasoning (store-bought or homemade)
  • 2 teaspoons brown sugar or sweetener
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • to taste salt and pepper

The sauce

  • 1 cup BBQ sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon liquid smoke

Instructions

  1. Combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, onions, garlic, egg, and half of the spices in a bowl.
  2. Mix gently and form into meatballs, being careful not to overwork the mixture.
  3. Spray the slow cooker with cooking oil and place the meatballs inside.
  4. Cook on High for 2 hours or Low for 4 hours without opening the lid.
  5. Meanwhile, mix the BBQ sauce, remaining spices, liquid smoke, and Worcestershire sauce.
  6. After the initial cooking time, drain excess fat if necessary and pour the BBQ sauce over the meatballs without stirring.
  7. Continue cooking for an additional 1 hour and 30 minutes on High or 3 hours on Low.
  8. Check the internal temperature of the meatballs to ensure they reach 160°F before serving.
