Ingredients

The scones

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons orange zest
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, frozen
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 heaping cup frozen cranberries
  • 1 Tablespoon heavy cream (optional, for brushing)
  • coarse sugar for sprinkling (optional)

The glaze

  • 1 cup confectioners’ sugar
  • 2-3 Tablespoons fresh orange juice

Instructions

  1. Mix the dry ingredients together in a large bowl.
  2. Grate the frozen butter and combine it with the dry mixture until crumbly.
  3. Whisk the wet ingredients in a separate bowl and then combine with the dry mixture and cranberries.
  4. Form the dough into an 8-inch disc and cut into 8 wedges.
  5. Brush the scones with heavy cream and sprinkle with coarse sugar.
  6. Refrigerate the scones for at least 15 minutes.
  7. Preheat the oven to 400°F (204°C) and prepare a baking sheet.
  8. Bake the scones for 22-25 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Make the glaze by whisking together confectioners’ sugar and orange juice, then drizzle over the scones.
