Ingredients

The base

  • 1/3 cup water
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 cups milk
  • 4 ounces bittersweet chocolate, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • teaspoon salt

For serving

  • to taste whipped cream
  • to taste marshmallows
  • to taste chocolate syrup

Instructions

  1. Boil water in a small saucepan and whisk in cocoa until mostly smooth.
  2. Reduce heat to medium and whisk in milk until cocoa powder is dissolved.
  3. Bring to a simmer and whisk in chocolate, sugar, and salt.
  4. Reduce heat to low and whisk until chocolate is smooth and incorporated.
  5. Taste and add more sugar if desired.
  6. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla.
  7. Serve with whipped cream and marshmallows if desired.
