Ingredients

The cake

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 ½ cups white sugar
  • cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 ¾ teaspoons salt
  • cup butter flavored shortening
  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • ½ cup milk

The caramel

  • 1 cup salted butter
  • 2 cups packed light brown sugar
  • ½ cup light corn syrup
  • 1 cup chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Mix the flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, and salt for the cake until combined.
  2. Cut in the shortening until fine crumbs form, then add the butter and milk to form a thick dough.
  3. For the caramel, melt the salted butter over medium-low heat, then add brown sugar, corn syrup, and salt, bringing it to a low boil while stirring.
  4. Cook the caramel mixture gently for about 10 minutes until thickened, then stir in baking soda.
  5. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Spread half of the cake batter in a baking dish.
  6. Add chocolate chips and a layer of the caramel, reserving some caramel for later.
  7. Spread the remaining dough over the caramel layer and bake for 25-30 minutes.
  8. Let the cake cool for a few minutes before serving.
