The caramel

Instructions
- Mix the flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, and salt for the cake until combined.
- Cut in the shortening until fine crumbs form, then add the butter and milk to form a thick dough.
- For the caramel, melt the salted butter over medium-low heat, then add brown sugar, corn syrup, and salt, bringing it to a low boil while stirring.
- Cook the caramel mixture gently for about 10 minutes until thickened, then stir in baking soda.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Spread half of the cake batter in a baking dish.
- Add chocolate chips and a layer of the caramel, reserving some caramel for later.
- Spread the remaining dough over the caramel layer and bake for 25-30 minutes.
- Let the cake cool for a few minutes before serving.
