Ingredients

8-Spice Blend

  • 2 teaspoons ground coriander
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper

Tempeh and Marinade

  • 2 8-oz blocks tempeh
  • 2 tablespoons 8-spice blend
  • ¼ cup balsamic vinegar
  • ¼ cup water
  • 2 tablespoons heat-tolerant oil (e.g., avocado)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon gluten-free tamari soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon agave nectar or maple syrup
  • to taste sea salt and ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. 1. Make the 8-spice blend by whisking together all the spices in a medium bowl.
  2. 2. Prepare the tempeh by steaming it for 10 minutes in a saucepan with simmering water.
  3. 3. While the tempeh is steaming, blend the marinade ingredients until emulsified.
  4. 4. Arrange the steamed tempeh in a dish and pour the marinade over it, ensuring maximum exposure.
  5. 5. Cover and marinate the tempeh for at least 1 hour (up to 8 hours in the fridge), flipping halfway through.
  6. 6. Preheat the grill to medium and clean the grates.
  7. 7. Grill the tempeh for about 5 minutes on each side until char marks appear.
  8. 8. Serve hot with your choice of accompaniments.
