Ingredients

The tofu and marinade

  • 1 block (14-16 ounces) extra firm tofu
  • ½ cup barbecue sauce
  • ¼ cup apple cider vinegar
  • ¼ cup water
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce (optional)

For cooking and serving

  • 1 tablespoon canola or vegetable oil
  • 2-4 whole whole wheat burger buns
  • 1 cup tahini coleslaw
  • to taste optional toppings (lettuce, pickles, pimento cheese)

Instructions

  1. Press the tofu for 10 minutes to remove excess moisture.
  2. Cut the tofu block lengthways into 5 slices.
  3. In a bowl, combine the barbecue sauce, apple cider vinegar, water, and hot sauce to create the marinade.
  4. Coat the tofu slices in the marinade and let them marinate for at least 30 minutes.
  5. Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.
  6. Add the marinated tofu to the skillet and sauté each side for about 5 minutes or until browned and crispy.
  7. Assemble the sandwiches by placing the tofu on the buns and topping with tahini coleslaw and optional toppings.
