Ingredients

Dough

  • ¾ cup warm milk
  • 2 cups All-Purpose Flour
  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ cup soft unsalted butter
  • 2 teaspoons rapid rise or instant yeast
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Filling

  • 1 large egg (beaten)
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon cardamom
  • ¾ cup dried cranberries (optional)
  • ¾ cup sliced almonds (optional)

Garnish

  • to taste powdered sugar
  • to taste melted butter

Instructions

  1. Make the dough by mixing all dough ingredients in a stand mixer or by hand until smooth.
  2. Let the dough rise in a greased bowl for about 60 minutes until doubled in size.
  3. Divide the dough into four pieces and let them rest for 15 minutes.
  4. Roll each piece into a 10-inch circle and layer them with egg wash, spiced sugar, cranberries, and almonds.
  5. Cut the layered dough into 16 strips, leaving the center intact.
  6. Twist pairs of strips to form points of an 8-point star.
  7. Cover and let the star rise for about 45 minutes.
  8. Preheat the oven and bake for 14 to 16 minutes until golden brown.
