Ingredients

The scones

  • 1 and 2/3 cups all-purpose flour
  • cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 and ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, frozen
  • ½ cup + 1 heavy cream
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 and ½ teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 6 ounces semi-sweet chocolate, coarsely chopped

The glaze and topping

  • 1 cup confectioners’ sugar
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 Tablespoons water
  • 4 ounces semi-sweet chocolate, coarsely chopped

Instructions

  1. Mix the dry ingredients in a large bowl.
  2. Grate the frozen butter and combine it with the dry ingredients until crumbly.
  3. Whisk the wet ingredients in a separate bowl and then combine with the dry mixture along with chopped chocolate.
  4. Form the dough into a ball and press it into an 8-inch disc, then cut into 8 wedges.
  5. Refrigerate the scones for at least 15 minutes.
  6. Preheat the oven to 400°F (204°C) and prepare a baking sheet.
  7. Bake the scones for 22-25 minutes until set.
  8. Prepare the glaze by whisking together the glaze ingredients and dunk the warm scones in it.
  9. Drizzle melted chocolate over the glazed scones before serving.
