Ingredients

The scones

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup natural unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup cold salted butter
  • 1 cup semisweet or dark chocolate chips
  • 1 ¼ cups buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • to taste coarse sugar, for sprinkling

The glaze

  • ¼ cup cocoa powder
  • ¾ cup powdered sugar
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk or cream

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Grate the cold butter into the dry ingredients and toss to combine.
  4. Add the chocolate chips, buttermilk, and vanilla extract, mixing with a spatula until the dough comes together.
  5. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and pat into a rectangle about 15x3 inches. Cut into 10-12 triangle wedges.
  6. Place the scones on the baking sheet, brush with melted butter, and sprinkle with coarse sugar.
  7. Bake for 12-15 minutes until just set and not doughy.
  8. Let the scones cool slightly before preparing the glaze.
  9. Whisk together the cocoa powder, powdered sugar, and milk or cream until smooth.
  10. Drizzle the glaze over the cooled scones and serve.
