Indonesian Beef Skewers

Ingredients

The beef skewers

  • pounds boneless top sirloin steak
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon salad oil
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander

Basting Sauce

  • 3 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cumin
  • ¼ teaspoon ground coriander

Peanut Sauce

  • 1 cup water
  • cup creamy peanut butter
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced or pressed)
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • ¼ teaspoon chili powder

Instructions

  1. Cut the meat into 1-inch cubes.
  2. Combine garlic, soy sauce, oil, cumin, and coriander in a bowl.
  3. Add the meat to the marinade, stir to coat, cover, and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight, stirring occasionally.
  4. Prepare the Basting Sauce and Peanut Sauce, and soak bamboo skewers in water.
  5. Thread 4 or 5 pieces of meat onto each skewer.
  6. Grill the skewers 2 to 4 inches above hot coals, turning often until browned and cooked to your liking (about 8 to 10 minutes for medium-rare).
  7. Brush the skewers with Basting Sauce about 3 minutes before they are done.
  8. Serve the skewers with Peanut Sauce.
