Vegan General Tso's Tempeh

Ingredients

The tempeh

  • 1 block organic living tempeh
  • 3 tbsp tapioca starch
  • ½ tsp Chinese five spice
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp ground black pepper
  • enough amount oil for frying

The sauce

  • 1 cup water
  • ¼ cup rice vinegar
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 tbsp fresh ginger, minced
  • 3 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 tbsp tamari sauce
  • 2 tbsp blackstrap molasses
  • 2 tbsp pure maple syrup
  • 2 tbsp toasted sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp creamy peanut butter
  • 1 tbsp white vinegar
  • ½ tsp red pepper flakes
  • ¼ tsp Chinese five spice

To serve

  • as needed amount cooked jasmine rice
  • as needed amount steamed broccoli

Instructions

  1. Cut the tempeh into bite-size chunks and steam for 10 minutes.
  2. While steaming, combine the sauce ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a boil, then set aside.
  3. If frying, mix tapioca starch, Chinese five spice, salt, and black pepper in a bowl, then coat the steamed tempeh pieces.
  4. Heat oil in a wok or deep frying pan to 340ºF and fry the tempeh until crispy and golden brown, about 3 minutes.
  5. Transfer the fried tempeh back to the wok, pour in the sauce, stir well, and simmer briefly.
  6. Serve with cooked jasmine rice and steamed broccoli, or your favorite sides.
