Ingredients

  • ¼ cup vegetable oil
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 32 ounce tomato sauce
  • 3 cups chicken broth or vegetable broth
  • 3 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon table salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar

Instructions

  1. Heat vegetable oil in a saucepan over medium heat and mix in all-purpose flour.
  2. Lower the heat and cook the flour/oil mixture for a few minutes to create a roux.
  3. Add tomato sauce, chicken broth, spices, and brown sugar to the saucepan and whisk together.
  4. Increase the heat to medium-high and bring the mixture to a light boil.
  5. Reduce the heat to a simmer and cook the sauce for 10 minutes.
  6. Allow the sauce to cool and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
