Instructions
- 1. Sift together flour, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl and set aside.
- 2. Beat butter and sugar until pale and fluffy, then add egg yolks and vanilla.
- 3. Reduce mixer speed to low and gradually add flour mixture and milk until just incorporated.
- 4. Shape the dough into a ball, wrap in plastic wrap, and chill for at least 2 hours.
- 5. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- 6. Roll the chilled dough to 1/8-inch thickness between parchment paper and cut with cookie cutters.
- 7. Transfer cookies to prepared baking sheets and bake for 8 to 10 minutes until lightly browned.
- 8. Cool cookies on wire racks completely before decorating.
- 9. For royal icing, beat egg whites and vanilla until foamy, then gradually add powdered sugar and beat until glossy.
- 10. Add food coloring if desired, then transfer icing to piping bags for decorating.
