Frosted Valentine Cookies

Ingredients

The cookie dough

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup butter, softened (2 sticks)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large egg yolks
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • cup milk

The royal icing

  • 3 ounces pasteurized egg whites
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 cups powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. 1. Sift together flour, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl and set aside.
  2. 2. Beat butter and sugar until pale and fluffy, then add egg yolks and vanilla.
  3. 3. Reduce mixer speed to low and gradually add flour mixture and milk until just incorporated.
  4. 4. Shape the dough into a ball, wrap in plastic wrap, and chill for at least 2 hours.
  5. 5. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  6. 6. Roll the chilled dough to 1/8-inch thickness between parchment paper and cut with cookie cutters.
  7. 7. Transfer cookies to prepared baking sheets and bake for 8 to 10 minutes until lightly browned.
  8. 8. Cool cookies on wire racks completely before decorating.
  9. 9. For royal icing, beat egg whites and vanilla until foamy, then gradually add powdered sugar and beat until glossy.
  10. 10. Add food coloring if desired, then transfer icing to piping bags for decorating.
