Instructions
- Whisk the flour, baking powder, and salt together in a bowl and set aside.
- Beat the butter and sugar until smooth, then add the egg, vanilla, and almond extract and mix well.
- Combine the dry ingredients with the wet ingredients until a soft dough forms.
- Divide the dough in half, roll out each half to ¼ inch thickness, and chill for at least 2 hours.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Cut the chilled dough into heart shapes and bake for 11–12 minutes until lightly browned.
- Cool the cookies on a wire rack before decorating.
- Prepare the royal icing by mixing the confectioners’ sugar, meringue powder, and water until smooth.
- Color the icing as desired and decorate the cookies, allowing the icing to set.
