Ingredients

The Fish Sticks

  • 1 14 oz. jar hearts of palm, drained, rinsed and pat dry, chopped
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon Old Bay seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon dried crumbled nori
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper

The Beer Batter

  • 1 ½ cup flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Old Bay seasoning
  • 1 cup beer or sparkling water

The Vegan Tartar Sauce

  • ½ cup vegan mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon lemon or lime juice
  • 1 tablespoon chopped pickles or sweet relish
  • a pinch salt
  • a pinch pepper
  • 1 tablespoon freshly chopped dill

For Frying

  • 1 cup peanut oil or safflower oil

Instructions

  1. Prepare the vegan tartar sauce by mixing all ingredients in a bowl and refrigerate.
  2. In a food processor, pulse the fish stick ingredients until combined, maintaining some flakiness.
  3. Transfer the mixture to a baking sheet and shape into fish sticks, refrigerate to firm up.
  4. Mix the dry batter ingredients in a bowl, then add the beer and stir to combine.
  5. Heat oil in a skillet, dip each fish stick in the batter, and fry until golden brown on both sides.
  6. Serve the cooked fish sticks with the tartar sauce.
