Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup chopped fresh carrots
  • 1 cup chopped fresh celery
  • 6 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1 pound dried split peas (green), rinsed
  • 1.5 pounds ham hocks or smoked turkey leg
  • 1 teaspoon Better Than Bouillon Ham Base (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon thyme
  • 1 leaf bay leaf
  • to taste salt and pepper

Instructions

  1. 1. Sauté onions, garlic, celery, and carrots in olive oil in the Instant Pot for 2-3 minutes until soft.
  2. 2. Add broth, split peas, ham hocks, thyme, bay leaf, Better Than Bouillon, salt, and pepper; stir to combine.
  3. 3. Seal the pot and cook on high pressure for 15 minutes.
  4. 4. Allow steam to release naturally for 15 minutes.
  5. 5. Open the pot, remove bay leaf and ham hocks, and shred any meat from the bones back into the soup.
  6. 6. Stir the soup until creamy and adjust seasoning as needed before serving.
