Ingredients

Base Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp Olive Oil
  • 2 Tbsp Butter
  • 1 medium Onion, diced
  • 3 Stalks Celery, diced
  • 2 each Bay Leaves
  • ¼ tsp Thyme Leaves, dried
  • 3 each Carrots, chopped
  • 4 cloves Garlic, pressed or finely minced
  • ¼ tsp Pepper
  • 6 cups Chicken or Vegetable Broth, low sodium
  • 1 lb Green Split Peas, rinsed and sorted (unsoaked)
  • 1 tsp Liquid Smoke (Optional)
  • ½ tsp Kosher Salt (add last, after cooking, if needed)

Optional Ingredients

  • 6 slices Bacon, chopped (Optional)
  • 2 small Ham Hocks (Optional)
  • 1 each Leftover Ham Bone (Optional)
  • 2 - 3 cups Diced Leftover Ham (Optional)

Instructions

  1. Turn on the Instant Pot to the Sauté function and heat the olive oil and butter.
  2. Add the onion, celery, bay leaves, and thyme, cooking until the onion is translucent.
  3. Stir in the carrots, garlic, and bacon or ham if using, cooking for an additional minute.
  4. Pour in the broth and add the ham bone or ham hocks if using, bringing it to a simmer.
  5. Stir in the split peas.
  6. Seal the lid and set the steam release knob to the Sealing position.
  7. Cancel the sauté function and select Pressure Cook/Manual for 18 minutes on high pressure.
  8. After cooking, let the pot sit for 15 minutes for natural pressure release, then quick release any remaining pressure.
  9. Carefully open the lid, remove bay leaves and any bones or hocks.
  10. Taste the soup and add salt as needed before serving hot.
