Ingredients

For the Pan

Crumb Topping

  • ½ cup sugar
  • cup flour
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ cup butter, cubed

Bread

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup applesauce
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup butter, melted and cooled
  • ½ cup peeled and chopped apples

Optional Glaze

  • 1 cup confectioner's sugar
  • 4 teaspoons water

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and prepare a 9 x 5 loaf pan with butter and flour.
  2. In a small bowl, mix sugar, flour, and cinnamon for the crumb topping, then cut in the butter until crumbly.
  3. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt.
  4. In a medium bowl, whisk together buttermilk, applesauce, eggs, and vanilla.
  5. Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and stir in the melted butter until just combined, then fold in the chopped apples.
  6. Spread the batter evenly in the prepared pan and sprinkle the crumb topping over it.
  7. Bake for 50 to 55 minutes, rotating halfway through, until a toothpick comes out clean.
  8. Let the bread cool in the pan for 30 minutes before removing.
