Ingredients

The bread

  • 1 ½ cups all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon all spice
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
  • 2 large eggs
  • ¼ cup canola oil
  • ¼ cup applesauce
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups chopped apples (skin removed)

The topping

  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and prepare an 8 by 4 loaf pan.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, all spice, and cloves.
  3. In a stand mixer, beat the eggs, then add oil, applesauce, and vanilla until smooth.
  4. Mix in the sugar until well combined.
  5. Gradually add the flour mixture and mix until just combined, then fold in the apple chunks.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan.
  7. Mix brown sugar, sugar, and cinnamon in a small bowl and sprinkle over the batter.
  8. Bake for 50-55 minutes until golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
  9. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then remove and cool completely on a wire rack before slicing.
