Ingredients

The bread

  • ¼ cup unsalted butter
  • cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon allspice
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, slightly beaten
  • ¼ cup applesauce
  • teaspoons vanilla extract
  • cups chopped apples, skin removed

The glaze

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3-4 tablespoons milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and prepare an 8x4 loaf pan.
  2. Melt the butter for the bread in a saucepan until golden brown and set aside to cool.
  3. Whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, allspice, and cloves in a bowl.
  4. In another bowl, whisk the sugar and eggs, then stir in the browned butter, applesauce, and vanilla until smooth.
  5. Combine the dry ingredients with the wet mixture and fold in the apple chunks.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and bake for 55-60 minutes until golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Cool the bread in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. For the glaze, melt the butter in a saucepan until golden brown, then mix with powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk until smooth.
  9. Spread the glaze over the cooled bread, slice, and enjoy.
