Ingredients

The burger mixture

  • 3 cups cooked black beans, drained and rinsed
  • cup grated yellow onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 peppers chipotle peppers from a can of chipotles in adobo, diced
  • 2 tablespoons adobo sauce
  • 1 tablespoon tamari
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup panko bread crumbs

For cooking

  • as needed extra virgin olive oil, for brushing
  • as needed cooking spray, if grilling
  • as needed hamburger buns and desired fixings, for serving

Instructions

  1. Combine black beans, onion, garlic, chipotles, adobo sauce, tamari, balsamic, cumin, salt, and pepper in a large bowl and mash until cohesive.
  2. Add the egg and mix until combined, then fold in the panko.
  3. Form the mixture into 6 patties, adjusting consistency as needed.
  4. Heat a cast-iron skillet or preheat an outdoor grill.
  5. Cook the patties for about 5 minutes per side in the skillet or grill for 8 minutes on one side and 4 minutes on the other.
  6. Serve with hamburger buns and desired fixings.
