Easy Black Bean Burger

Ingredients

The burger mixture

  • 3 cups cooked black beans
  • cup grated yellow onion
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 2 peppers chipotle peppers in adobo
  • 2 tablespoons adobo sauce
  • 1 tablespoon tamari
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup panko bread crumbs

For cooking and serving

  • as needed none extra-virgin olive oil
  • as needed none hamburger buns
  • as needed none desired fixings

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine black beans, onion, garlic, chipotles, adobo sauce, tamari, balsamic vinegar, cumin, salt, and pepper.
  2. Mash the mixture until it holds together but still has some visible chunks of black beans.
  3. Fold in the egg and then the panko bread crumbs.
  4. Form the mixture into 6 patties.
  5. If the mixture is too wet, chill it in the fridge for 20 minutes.
  6. Heat a cast-iron skillet over medium heat and brush with oil, cooking the burgers for about 5 minutes per side until charred.
  7. Alternatively, grill the patties for 8 minutes on the first side and 4 minutes on the second side.
  8. Serve the burgers with buns and desired fixings.
