Ingredients

Base Ingredients

  • 1 can (14 ounce) black beans
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs or oats or oat flour
  • 1 small onion
  • 1 to 3 cloves garlic

Optional Add-Ins

  • to taste roasted sweet potato
  • to taste mushrooms
  • to taste figs
  • to taste olives
  • to taste peppers
  • to taste caramelized onions

Spices

  • to taste chili powder
  • to taste cumin
  • to taste paprika
  • to taste fresh cilantro
  • to taste ancho chile powder

Toppings

  • 1 slice cheese (dairy-based or vegan)
  • to taste mustard
  • to taste ketchup
  • to taste salsa
  • to taste chutney
  • to taste hummus

Instructions

  1. Drain and rinse the black beans.
  2. In a food processor, combine black beans, breadcrumbs or oats, diced onion, and minced garlic.
  3. Pulse until finely chopped and well mixed, being careful not to over-process.
  4. Shape the mixture into patties, yielding about four to six patties.
  5. Lightly oil a nonstick skillet and cook the patties over medium heat for about 4 minutes on each side.
  6. Alternatively, bake the patties on parchment paper at 400°F for about 15 minutes on each side.
  7. For grilling, bake first until set, then grill over foil.
