Ingredients

The Hamburger Steaks

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ cup bread crumbs
  • ½-1 teaspoon white or black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons minced or grated onion
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic

The Mushroom Onion Gravy

  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • ½ cup water
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1-1½ cups sliced mushrooms
  • 1 cup onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon minced thyme
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • ½ tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon creole seasoning

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, egg, bread crumbs, pepper, salt, grated onion, and minced garlic.
  2. Mix gently until fully combined, then divide into 4-6 portions and flatten into patties.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together flour, beef broth, and water; set aside.
  4. Heat a lightly oiled skillet over medium-high heat and cook the patties for 2 minutes on each side until browned. Remove and set aside.
  5. In the same skillet, add butter, mushrooms, onion, thyme, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, and creole seasoning, and sauté for 6 minutes until tender.
  6. Add the prepared gravy mixture to the skillet and bring to a boil.
  7. Return the patties and any drippings to the skillet, season with salt and pepper as desired.
  8. Cover, reduce heat to low, and simmer for 8-10 minutes, adjusting thickness with more stock or water if needed.
