Ingredients

The patties

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ cup bread crumbs
  • ½-1 teaspoon white or black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons minced or grated onion
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic

The mushroom onion gravy

  • 2-3 tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 teaspoons minced thyme
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 10 ounces sliced mushrooms
  • ½ tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Creole seasoning
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • cups beef broth
  • ¾ cup water
  • to taste salt and pepper

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix the ground beef, egg, bread crumbs, pepper, salt, grated onion, and minced garlic until combined.
  2. Divide the mixture into 4-6 portions and lightly flatten each patty.
  3. Heat a lightly oiled skillet over medium-high heat and cook the patties for about 2 minutes on each side until browned. Remove and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, add butter, onion, thyme, garlic, mushrooms, Worcestershire sauce, and Creole seasoning. Sauté for 6 minutes until tender.
  5. Stir in the flour and cook for about a minute, then add the beef broth and bring to a boil, thickening for about 2 minutes.
  6. Return the patties to the skillet, season with salt and pepper, cover, reduce heat to low, and simmer for 8-10 minutes, adjusting thickness with more stock or water if needed.
