Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy

Ingredients

The patties

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp pepper
  • ½ cup yellow onion, minced

The gravy

  • 1 Tbsp cooking oil
  • 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 Tbsp butter
  • 2 Tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 cups beef broth
  • 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Mince about ½ cup of the onion and slice the remaining onion.
  2. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, minced onion, breadcrumbs, egg, 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Mix well and shape into four oval patties.
  3. Heat cooking oil in a skillet over medium heat and cook the patties for about 5 minutes on each side until browned. Transfer to a plate.
  4. In the same skillet, add sliced mushrooms and remaining sliced onion with a pinch of salt and pepper. Cook until softened.
  5. Add butter and flour to the skillet, stirring to form a paste and cook for about 2 minutes.
  6. Stir in beef broth and remaining Worcestershire sauce, bringing to a simmer to thicken into gravy.
  7. Return the patties to the skillet, spoon gravy over them, and simmer for an additional 5 minutes. Adjust seasoning if necessary.
