Hamburger Steak with Mushroom Gravy

Ingredients

The steaks

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 ¼ pounds ground beef
  • cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 tablespoons onion
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon pepper

The gravy

  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 8 ounces sliced mushrooms
  • ½ cup onion
  • 1 teaspoon garlic
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 1 ½ cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons low sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon chopped parsley
  • to taste salt and pepper

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large pan over high heat.
  2. Combine the steak ingredients in a bowl and mix thoroughly.
  3. Shape the mixture into 4 oval patties.
  4. Cook the patties for 4-5 minutes on each side until browned, then cover with foil to keep warm.
  5. In the same pan, melt butter and add mushrooms and onions, seasoning with salt and pepper.
  6. Cook until the mushrooms and onions are tender and browned, then add garlic and cook briefly.
  7. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute, then gradually add beef broth while whisking until smooth.
  8. Bring the sauce to a simmer and cook until thickened, then stir in Worcestershire and soy sauce.
  9. Return the hamburger steaks to the pan and coat with the gravy, cooking until warmed through.
  10. Garnish with parsley and serve.
