Ahi Tuna with Ponzu Sauce

Ingredients

The Ponzu Sauce

  • cup soy sauce
  • ¼ cup fresh lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
  • 2 tablespoons mirin
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • teaspoon cayenne pepper

The Ahi Tuna

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 pieces ahi tuna steaks (8 ounces each)
  • to taste scallions for garnish
  • to taste toasted sesame seeds for garnish
  • to serve cooked rice

Instructions

  1. Whisk together soy sauce, lemon juice, lime juice, mirin, brown sugar, and cayenne pepper in a small bowl.
  2. Divide the sauce in half and reserve one half for dipping.
  3. Coat the tuna steaks in the remaining ponzu sauce and marinate for at least one hour.
  4. In a large nonstick skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat until shimmering.
  5. Remove tuna steaks from marinade, wipe off excess, and add to the skillet without moving.
  6. Sear the tuna for 1 to 2 minutes on each side for rare.
  7. Transfer the tuna to a cutting board and let it rest for 5 minutes.
  8. Slice the tuna into ¼-inch slices, garnish with scallions, and serve with rice and reserved ponzu sauce.
