Ingredients

The base

  • 8–10 cups cubed bread
  • 9 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk

The filling

  • ½ cup diced tomato
  • ½ cup diced green bell pepper
  • 2 cups cooked and cubed ham
  • 2 cups shredded cheese
  • 2 tablespoons green onion

The spices

  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon ground mustard
  • ¼ teaspoon fresh ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13-inch casserole dish.
  2. Layer the bread, followed by the peppers, tomatoes, and ham, then sprinkle cheese on top.
  3. Whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, ground mustard, smoked paprika, and pepper, then pour over the layered ingredients.
  4. Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour or overnight.
  5. Let the casserole sit at room temperature for 15 minutes before baking.
  6. Preheat the oven to 375°F (191°C).
  7. Bake uncovered for 30 minutes, then loosely cover with foil and bake for an additional 20-30 minutes until browned and puffy.
  8. Allow to cool for 5 minutes before serving.
