Ingredients

The base

  • 3 tablespoons oil or butter
  • ½ medium onion, peeled and diced
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 12 ounces frozen mixed vegetables

The seasoning

  • 1 ½ teaspoons kosher or sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon dried mustard powder
  • ½ teaspoon celery salt
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper

The sauce

  • 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups unsalted beef stock
  • Dash Worcestershire sauce (optional)

The toppings

  • ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • ~70-75 pieces frozen tater tots

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F.
  2. Heat oil or butter in a large oven-safe skillet over medium heat.
  3. Sauté the diced onion until soft, about 4-5 minutes.
  4. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up as it cooks.
  5. Stir in the mixed vegetables and sauté for another 2-3 minutes.
  6. Add the salt, mustard powder, celery salt, onion powder, garlic powder, and black pepper.
  7. Stir in the flour until well combined, then increase the heat to medium-high.
  8. Add the beef stock and bring to a simmer, stirring until thickened.
  9. Taste and adjust seasoning, then stir in Worcestershire sauce if using.
  10. Flatten the beef mixture in the skillet, sprinkle cheddar cheese on top, and line with tater tots.
  11. Bake for 20-25 minutes until the tater tots are golden and the filling is bubbly.
  12. Let rest for 5 minutes before serving.
