Ingredients

The base

  • 1 loaf brioche, challah, or French bread (14-16 ounces)
  • 3 cups full-fat egg nog
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon rum flavoring or spiced rum (⅓ cup)
  • 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice

The topping

  • ¼ cup white sugar
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
  • 1 tablespoon fresh orange rind (about 1 medium orange)
  • 1 ounce finely chopped pecans (about ¼ cup)
  • 2 tablespoons cold butter

Instructions

  1. Butter a 9x13 inch baking dish and set aside.
  2. Cut the bread into 1 inch cubes and place in the prepared pan.
  3. In a blender or mixing bowl, combine egg nog, eggs, vanilla, rum/rum flavoring, and pumpkin pie spice, then blend or whisk until well combined.
  4. Pour the mixture evenly over the bread cubes, ensuring all cubes are coated.
  5. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F when ready to bake.
  7. In a small bowl, combine the topping ingredients and mix well.
  8. Uncover the bread mixture and sprinkle the topping over it.
  9. Bake for 45-55 minutes until golden brown and set in the middle.
  10. Allow to stand for 5-10 minutes before cutting into squares.
