Ingredients

The donuts

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • teaspoon ground cloves
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 large egg
  • cup light brown sugar
  • ¼ cup milk
  • ¼ cup yogurt or sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

The maple icing

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • cup pure maple syrup
  • 1 cup sifted confectioners' sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon maple extract
  • a pinch salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C) and prepare the donut pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients.
  3. In another bowl, mix the wet ingredients until combined.
  4. Combine the wet and dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  5. Fill the donut cavities with the batter using a zipped-top bag.
  6. Bake for 10-11 minutes until lightly browned and springy to touch.
  7. Cool the donuts briefly in the pan, then transfer to a wire rack.
  8. Prepare the icing by melting butter and maple syrup, then whisk in the sugar and extract.
  9. Dip the warm donuts into the icing and let excess drip off.
