Ingredients

The donuts

  • cups apple cider
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ¾ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon apple pie spice
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 2 Tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup light or dark brown sugar
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

The topping

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ¾ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¾ teaspoon apple pie spice
  • 6 Tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Reduce the apple cider by simmering it in a saucepan until you have about ½ cup.
  2. Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C) and spray the donut pan with non-stick spray.
  3. Whisk together the dry ingredients in a large bowl.
  4. In another bowl, whisk together the wet ingredients, then combine with the dry ingredients and the reduced apple cider.
  5. Fill the donut pan cavities about halfway with the batter.
  6. Bake for 10-11 minutes until lightly browned, then cool for 2 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
  7. Coat the donuts in melted butter and then in the sugar and spice mixture.
