Ingredients

The dough

  • 1 ⅓ cups warm milk
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • cup sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • a pinch or two nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon fine grain sea salt

The coating

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 ½ cups sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Mix 1/3 cup warm milk with yeast and let it sit for 5 minutes.
  2. Combine remaining warm milk with butter and sugar, then add to yeast mixture.
  3. Stir in eggs, flour, nutmeg, and salt until just combined.
  4. Knead the dough until smooth, then place in a greased bowl and let rise until doubled in size.
  5. Roll out the dough and cut into doughnut shapes, allowing them to rise again.
  6. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F for 8 to 10 minutes until golden.
  7. Coat warm doughnuts in melted butter and toss in a sugar-cinnamon mixture.
