Ingredients

The vegetables

  • 2 pounds green beans

The seasoning

  • to taste salt
  • to taste black pepper

  • 8 slices bacon

The sweetener

  • ¼ cup brown sugar

The liquid

  • ¼ cup water

Instructions

  1. Prepare a large bowl of ice water before blanching the beans.
  2. In a large pot, bring 4 quarts of water and 1 tablespoon of salt to a boil.
  3. Add the green beans and boil until tender-crisp, about 3 to 5 minutes.
  4. Drain the beans and plunge them into the ice water to stop cooking.
  5. In a skillet, cook the bacon over medium-high heat until crisp, about 5 minutes.
  6. Add the blanched beans, brown sugar, and water to the skillet.
  7. Toss to combine, bring to a simmer, and cook until heated through, about 3 minutes.
  8. Season to taste and serve.
