Ingredients

The chicken

  • lbs boneless skinless chicken thighs, cut into 1 inch pieces
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • to taste salt
  • to taste pepper
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup cornstarch
  • as needed for frying vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons sesame seeds
  • 2 tablespoons green onions, sliced

The sauce

  • 2 teaspoons vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons minced fresh garlic
  • ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • ¾ cup low sodium chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • ¼ cup low sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

Instructions

  1. 1. Season the chicken with salt and pepper, then prepare the egg mixture.
  2. 2. Mix the flour and cornstarch in a shallow bowl.
  3. 3. Heat the oil in a deep pot to 350°F.
  4. 4. Dip each chicken piece in the egg mixture, then coat with the flour mixture.
  5. 5. Fry the chicken in batches until golden brown, about 5 minutes each.
  6. 6. While the chicken cooks, heat vegetable oil in a saucepan and sauté garlic and red pepper flakes.
  7. 7. Whisk together chicken broth, hoisin sauce, brown sugar, soy sauce, and cornstarch.
  8. 8. Add the sauce mixture to the pan and simmer until thickened.
  9. 9. Toss the fried chicken in the sauce and garnish with sesame seeds and green onions.
